The Origins of Dolcezza Gelato and Coffee

Rob Duncan and Violeta Edelman created Dolcezza Gelato and Coffee after a trip through the Brazilian Amazon to SĂŁo Paulo. Inspired in Buenos Aires at a popular gelato shop, they decided to turn their passion for Italian Gelato into a business. They opened their first shop in Georgetown in July 2004.

Location and Ambiance

Dolcezza Gelato and Coffee, scattered across DC, ranks 10th in TripAdvisor’s Desserts Category. As you explore the city’s famous landmarks, this Italian gelato shop is a welcoming stop for a refreshing snack. Regardless of the location, you’re welcomed in by the soft light and a clean, minimalistic cafe ambiance. Dolcezza Gelato guarantees an enjoyable experience for both tourists and locals.

Service and Food Allergy Accommodations

The service at Dolcezza Gelato and Coffee is kind and informed about allergens. While all gelato flavors contain dairy, which is clearly stated on the website, all sorbet flavors are dairy free. Servers take extra care to avoid cross-contamination using unique scoopers for each flavor.

Fun and Flavorful

At Dolcezza Gelato and Coffee, there is something for everyone. Some classic flavors include Mascarpone & Berries, Stracciatella, and Dark Chocolate. They also offer seasonal flavors from local farmers markets: “Strawberries during the Spring, Peaches in the Summer, Quince for the Fall and Sicilian Blood Orange during the Winter” and I tasted the quality at every visit. My favorites are Thai Coconut Milk and Dark Chocolate (as seen in the cover photo), which I ordered multiple times.

Pricing and Value

Although Dolcezza Gelato and Coffee may be more expensive than the usual ice cream, it’s worth it! For gelato or sorbet, you can order two scoops (small) for $5.60 and three (large) for $6.60. The push pops are $3.00, and a pint is $10.50. The affogato, an Italian dessert combining expresso and gelato is $6.00. The website proudly mentions the award-winning gelato “crafted with locally sourced ingredients.” The gelato is made fresh, and you can tell by the amazing taste. Drinks range from $2.55 to $9.10 and although expensive, they’re truly one of a kind. The food, including pastries and alfajores, range from $2.55 to $5.55.

Final Thoughts

Dolcezza is one of my favorites for a refreshing treat in DC. I highly recommend this place as a delicious, allergy-friendly stop for anyone visiting Washington, DC, and I can’t wait to go back.
