Top 11 Fragrance Free Skincare Brands: Perfect Picks for Eczema

Top 11 Fragrance Free Skincare Products

Hi there! Today I’m here to talk about our mission to find the best fragrance free skincare products for my teen who has been dealing with eczema since she was an infant. Recently, she underwent a skin patch test to see if certain chemicals, ointments and creams exacerbated her condition. Surprisingly, none of them were the problem. It turns out her skin issues primarily stem from eczema, not other allergies.

Fragrance Free Skin Care Brands For Sensitive Skin

Doctors advocate for simple skincare, especially for sensitive skin, advising against products with added scents. Instead, they suggest using ingredients like hyaluronic acid, aloe vera, soy, and oatmeal. However, finding effective fragrance free skincare can be challenging. Combining insights from online reviews and dermatologists’ recommendations, I’ve curated a list of 11 skincare brands we’ve tested over the years. So, similar to my list of fragrance-free haircare products, I’ll share our experiences and highlight some pros and cons gleaned from personal experience and recent online feedback. Additionally, I’ve included their approximate prices (current at the time of this article) along with Amazon links for your convenience.

So, if you’re in search for fragrance free products, we hope this list helps you discover the perfect skincare regimen for you!

  • Lightweight moisturizing lotion
  • Products come in pump bottles
  • High SPF protection (30) available in facial moisturizer and sunscreen

Dislikes:

  • AM face lotion can pill under other skincare
  • AM moisturizer can leave a white cast on skin, not suitable for all skin colors

Our Take on CERAVE

CeraVe has earned our family’s trust over time. Founded in 2005 by dermatogists aiming to help their patients, CeraVe products feature formulations infused with three essential ceramides, helping in restoring the skin’s natural protective barrier.

Among their offerings, the Fragrance-Free Moisturizing Cream  stands out as a savior during eczema flare-ups for our household. In fact, a 16 oz tub of Moisturizing Cream sits on the ledge of each of our bathtubs. Additionally, we’ve incorporated their daytime and night-time facial moisturizers into our routine. While we appreciate the high SPF (30) of the daytime moisturizer, we agree with online reviews regarding its tendency to pill when layered with other skin care products.

Dislikes:

  • Some find the formulas too basic
  • Limited availability of products with higher SPF (15)

Our Take on CETAPHIL

Dating back to 1947, Cetaphil has remained committed to providing dermatologically-backed skincare solutions. Its origins trace back to the creation of the Cetaphil Cleansing Lotion by a Texas pharmacist aiming to address first product to address his patients’ sensitive skin. Today, under the ownership of the Swiss company Galderma, the brand offers a diverse range of products tailored to a variety of skin concerns, featuring gentle yet effective formulas suitable for daily use.

Over the years, we’ve relied on Cetaphil’s fragrance-free products, finding them to be both gentle and effective for sensitive skin. Dermatologists commend the unscented Ultra Gentle Soothing Body Wash for its gentle, allergen-free formula, making it an ideal choice for those with sensitive skin. However, on some occasions, we unintentionally purchased the facial cleanser with added fragrance from the travel aisle. Therefore, we’d like to emphasize the importance of carefully checking labels, especially for individuals sensitive to fragrances within the family.

  • Moisturizing formulas
  • Variety of options for different preferences

Dislikes:

  • Some find the fragrances too strong in non-fragrance free products (so be careful when choosing your product to purchase)
  • Dove White bar soap may leave residue on the skin

Our Take on DOVE

Dove, established in 1957 in the US, has garnered trust over decades, particularly for its products tailored to sensitive skin. With a range of fragrance free options, Dove provides gentle cleansing ideal for people with eczema prone skin. The Dove White Bar Soap has a mild formula suitable for daily use. In addition, Dove offers Ultra Sensitive Body Wash and their Soothing Relief Body Wash with colloidal oatmeal.

In our household, Dove bar soap is a staple both in the shower and by bathroom sinks for hand-washing. Its gentle nature makes it the sole choice for my teen with year-round eczema-prone skin on her hands. Our dermatologists consistently advocate for Dove bar soap. However, it’s important to carefully review packaging to ensure fragrance-free preferences are met. Scented Dove products can be potent, triggering migraines, as experienced by my mother until she discontinued their use.

  • Hydro Boost fragrance-free line offers lightweight hydration

Dislikes:

  • Some find the formulas not hydrating enough
  • Shop carefully if you prefer their fragrance-free line. Their fragrance in some products may irritate sensitive skin.

Our Take on NEUTROGENA

Neutrogena’s origins trace back to 1930 when Emanuel Stolaroff founded Natone, a small LA-based company focused on cosmetics and personal hygiene. A pivotal moment arrived in 1954 with Stolaroff’s invention of patented clear liquid soap. In 1962, Lloyd Cotsen, the son-in-law of the company’s president, assumed leadership rebranding it as Neutrogena. By 1967, Cotsen had taken over president, expanding sales to dermatologists and luxury hotels. Today, Neutrogena remains a top choice for those seeking dermatologist-backed skincare.

My experience with Neutrogena dates back to my teenage years. Presently, my husband incorporates the glycerin-rich facial cleansing bar into his daily routine. While he previously favored the orange-colored fragrance-free liquid formula, it no longer seems to be produced. Despite Neutrogena’s widespread trust, some users, including myself, have found certain products lacking in hydration. Consequently, I transitioned from the classic orange formula. Presently, I happily embrace the fragrance free Hydro Boost with Hyaluronic Acid Hydrating Gel daily cleanser, joining my teen in using it.

  • Olay Moisturizing Face Lotion is budget friendly and suitable for sensitive skin

Dislikes:

  • Some find the formulas too heavy
  • Limited availability of fragrance-free options in certain product lines

OUR TAKE ON OLAY

Olay, established in 1952 by Graham Wulff, has been an enduring presence in skincare regimens for generations. I fondly recall my mother’s daily use of the moisturizer in the classic white bottle with black cap during my upbringing, fostering nostalgic memories. Today, I rely on Olay for my skincare needs, particularly favoring the Olay Regenerist Micro-Sculpting Cream Hydrating Moisture (fragrance free) for nightly use. For the day, I opt for the Olay Total Effects 7 in One Fragrance Free Moisturizer.

I was pleasantly surprised by the extensive range of fragrance free options Olay has developed over the years. While these products are occasionally on sale at Costco, they often come in pairs, presenting a practical shopping consideration. With so many fragrance-free options, it can sometimes be challenging to keep track of them all. While some users may find certain formulas to be heavy on the skin, Olay maintains its respected status in skincare, delivering effective solutions for a variety of skincare needs.

Our Take on AVEENO

The Aveeno brand began in 1945 with brothers Sidney and Albert Musher, entrepreneurs intrigued by natural remedies. Collaborating with the Mayo Clinic to uncover the soothing properties of oats, they laid the groundwork for the innovative skincare solutions we rely on today. Aveeno garnered a reputation for its gentle yet effective skincare products.

Our experience with Aveeno products began with their fragrance-free baby line and the Aveeno Soothing Bath Treatment, providing relief for eczema flareups over the years. Online reviews highlight the Calm + Restore Triple Oat Serum and Daily Moisturizing Lotion for their lightweight hydration and quick-absorbing formula. Users appreciate the lotion’s ability to calm and soothe inflamed skin, leaving behind no greasy or shiny residue. Overall, Aveeno’s fragrance-free products cater to individuals with sensitive skin, offering gentle yet effective solutions for various skincare concerns.

Our Take on VANICREAM

In 1974, pharmacists Conrad Thompson and Ed Mansfield identified the needs of sensitive skin patients, leading to the establishment ofPharmaceutical Specialists, Inc. (PSI) in 1975. Committed to safe, effective ingredients. Today, Vanicream continues to uphold their legacy and MidWest roots, offering quality products worldwide.

Vanicream products are known for their effective yet gentle formulations. While we’ve tried some of their haircare products, including shampoo, conditioner, and hair gel, our experience with their skincare products is limited. However, reviews are overwhelmingly positive for Vanicream’s efficacy. The only recurring critique pertains to cream’s heaviness, although even negative reviews acknowledge its effectiveness.

Dislikes:

  • Some users find the formulas too thick or greasy
  • Limited availability in certain regions

Our Take on CUREL

Introduced in 1984 by SC Johnson, Curel Skincare emerged as a response to chronic dry skin, pioneering “cationic technology” for superior moisturization. Despite ownership transitions to Bausch & Lomb and then Kao Corporation in 1998, Curel’s commitment to innovation persisted, exemplified by the breakthrough Advanced Ceramide Complex.  This formula propelled Curel to become Japan’s top dry, sensitive skin brand by 2008. Today, Curel continues its mission with innovations like Hydra Therapy Wet Skin Moisturizer for maximum hydration.

Formerly, we relied on Curel’s Original Lotion for Dry Skin, appreciating its light scent. However, transitioning to fragrance free options prompted our interest in their Itch Defense Calming Body Lotion. Curel’s range includes a fragrance free foaming wash, cleansing oil, anti-wrinkle hydrating serum, and makeup cleansing gel, and moisturizing facial cream. Rooted in scientific innovation and a commitment to addressing skin concerns, Curel offers effective relief for those looking to restore their skin’s health and hydration. While some may find certain formulations too heavy, many commend the brand for delivering lasting moisture and soothing care, making it a trusted name in skincare.

Our Take on AQUAFOR

Aquaphor is a brand under Beiersdorf, a global company with nearly 140 years of history. Alongside Coppertone, Eucerin, and NIVEA, Aquaphor offers innovative skincare solutions globally.

We first became acquainted with Aquafor when it was recommended by our pediatrician years ago for diaper changes. Establishing trust with infants has earned its status as a skincare staple. It also has an impressive ability to address various skin concerns. We love Aquafor and consider it a premium version to Vaseline. Whether you use it as a lip balm, cuticle treatment, or overnight mask, Aquafor delivers consistent results. In fact, it seems to have established itself as a cult favorite. I have also seen rave reviews for the Ointment Body Spray, a spray-on version of the best-selling Healing Ointment. People love it for it’s lightweight moisturizing effects that can be applied anywhere on your body. However, individuals sensitive to beeswax should exercise caution with with the Lip Repair Stick, as it contains this allergenic ingredient.

Our Take on HONEST BEAUTY

Inspired by her own experiences as a mother and her childhood health challenges, Jessica Alba co-founded The Honest Company in 2012. Her vision was to provide safe and effective alternatives to conventional baby products, free from synthetic fragrances and petrochemicals. Partnering with Brian Lee, known for his successes with LegalZoom and ShoeDazzle.com, Alba launched the company with 17 products and a $6 million investment of their own money.

Our first trial with Honest Beauty line involved trying their fragrance free Shampoo + Body Wash, featuring lavender and chamomile essential oils. Subsequently, we explored their Sensitive line, comprising a Bubble Bath, Face + Body Lotion, and Shampoo + Body Wash, and Conditioner. Despite potential concerns about pricing and varying product effectiveness, Honest Beauty maintains its reputation as an ethical beauty brand.

Final Thoughts

In conclusion, the benefits of using fragrance-free products extend far beyond personal skincare preferences. By opting for fragrance-free options, we can minimize the risk of irritation and allergic reactions, especially for those with sensitive skin. Additionally, fragrance-free products contribute to a healthier indoor environment by reducing the presence of potentially harmful chemicals in personal care routines.

So we hope this exploration of fragrance-free skincare brands has provided valuable insights and options for anyone seeking gentle, effective, and safe skincare solutions. Thank you for joining us on this journey, and may your skincare routine be as soothing and refreshing as some of these fragrance-free products themselves!
