Unconventional Diner: An Upscale Diner With Amazing Unconventional Food
Hey there! Today I’d like to share another restaurant review from our DC trip. We stumbled upon this super cool place called Unconventional Diner during Spring Break. It instantly became our absolute favorite spot to eat. With the name, Unconventional Diner, it’s not your average diner. The name “Unconventional” means doing things in a totally different way including serving up dishes you wouldn’t find at just any restaurant.
Atmosphere:
Unconventional Diner has a modern, but casual vibe. It’s located in the Walter E. Washington Convention Center, and has an industrial-chic look. The white walls and sea foam green booths give it a modern feel, like stepping into a trendy bistro.
Fearless Foodie Highlights:
We had the Chicken Parm Florentine ($26). It came with Spaghetti in a rich Gruyere sauce. The chicken was baked perfectly and each bite exploded with flavor with fresh tomato sauce mixed with spinach. We also tried the Miso Salmon ($29), which came with Okra & Broccolini and Fermented chili. It was light, flavorful, and had a nice tang and spice.
Oh, and let’s not forget the Buttermilk Biscuit ($5)! We got it with a side of Orange Marmalade, while my nephew had it with Bacon Jam. It was a southern-style fusion of flavors. We couldn’t resist the Peking Duck Confit($30). It was crispy, tender duck served with Bao Buns and House-made Hoisin sauce. It was a taste adventure, and they even made it sesame-free for Lily’s allergy.
Now, onto dessert! Ana Deshaeie is the award-winning pastry chef and Chef David’s wife. We had to try her ($10) Chocolate Cake with Cacao Ganache and a hint of sea salt. It was a chocolate dream. My brother shared his Sunny Eggs dessert ($12). This work of art was a sunny-side-up “sculpture” made with silky coconut panna cotta which included a “heavenly” mango mousse. While Lily couldn’t try it due to her mango allergy, he loved it. It won the Best Summer Dessert award for a reason—it was fun, fruity, and delicious.
Service and Food Allergy Accommodations:
From the moment we stepped in, the service was top-notch. Our waiter was friendly and knew everything about the menu. They even took care of our food allergies, so we could enjoy our meal without any worries. The menu made it super easy to find options for different dietary needs with each item carefully labels with the following codes: (v) Vegetarian, (v+) Vegan, Gluten-Free (gf), Dairy-Free (df), Contains Nuts (cn), Contains Seafood (sf), Gluten-Free (*).
Final Thoughts:
Unconventional Diner is the place to have an amazing dining experience. The menu is packed with creative culinary twists, the service was terrific, and vibe super cool. If you’re looking for a meal that will make your taste buds happy, check out Unconventional Diner. We can’t wait to go back!
